Nel 1814 Napoleone giunge in esilio all'Isola d'Elba accolto dall'entusiasmo esaltato del popolino e del notabilato locale. Ma c'è qualcuno che non festeggia: il giovane Martino Papucci, ultimogenito
di una famiglia di commercianti di Portoferraio, maestrino idealista e libertario, poeta in erba e amante libertino della bella e matura Baronessa Emilia. Martino detesta l'ex Imperatore e sogna tutte le notti di ucciderlo, per vendicare gli ideali rivoluzionari traditi e i tanti giovani mandati al massacro sui campi di battaglia di tutta Europa; così quando gli viene offerto di diventare scrivano e bibliotecario del nuovo Re dell'Elba, il ragazzo accetta con il segreto intento di compiere finalmente il delitto per il quale si sente predestinato. Ma l'impresa tirannicida si rivela più complicata del previsto: nella noia dell'esilio, il Bonaparte si diverte ad irretire quel giovanotto rivoluzionario, del quale probabilmente ha percepito subito l'ostilità, mostrandosi come un Eroe pateticamente al tramonto, ormai sconfitto, stanco e pentito.
Tra seduzioni e tradimenti, tentativi falliti e sorprendenti confessioni, si consuma l'incontro tra il candore e l'idealismo dei vent'anni con il disincanto dell'età adulta e la malizia del Potere. Fino alla beffarda e sorprendente delusione finale...


It is 1814, and Napoleon has been exiled to the Island of Elba, where he is received with extraordinary enthusiasm by the locals, both common and noble. But there is one person who does not celebrate his arrival: Martino Papucci, the youngest son of a family of merchants, idealist and liberal schoolteacher, undiscovered poet and libertine lover of the older and beautiful Baroness Emilia. Martino hates the former emperor and every night dreams of killing him to avenge both his betrayal of the principles of the Revolution and the lives of the countless young people sent to certain massacre on the battlefields of Europe. Thus, when Martino is offered the opportunity to be the librarian and secretary to the newly-anointed "King of Elba," the boy accepts with the secret intent of finally carrying out the violent act he perceives as his destiny. However, his plan of regicide proves more difficult than he had expected, for the aging sovereign, in the boredom of his banishment, enjoys ingratiating himself with the young revolutionary, whose hostility he has ably perceived, and thus sets about portraying himself as a hero at the pathetic sunset of his life, defeated, tired and repentant. Seduction and betrayal, failed assassinations and surprising confessions -- This encounter between, on the one hand, the candor and idealism of a boy in his twenties and, on the other, the guile of adulthood and the malice of power, plays out until the ruthless and surprising finale...
