| This is the film version, set in America, of the play by Eduardo De Filippo «The Mayor of Rione Sanità». Don Antonio Barracano is the old “padrino” of an Italo-American neighbourhood whom everybody turns to. He is married to Armida and has three children. The Barracano family live in a large house outside the city, and has a restaurant on the East side. The people who turn to Don Antonio are: Nate and Little Pal, two small-time crooks of the neighbourhood; Vincent Cuozzo, burdened by his debts to the local money lender "The Nose"; Rita and Raff, who are desperate because their marriage has been impeded by the young man's father, Arturo, with whom Don Antonio, in order to defend the young man, will have a terrible quarrel which will degenerate into his own death. At the end there are the charges laid by Dr. Fabio, a friend of Don Antonio's, who is about to leave for Italy. |
