La trama

"Questo nostro film nasce da un senso di colpa. Tre anni fa, quasi per caso, abbiamo scoperto la tragedia armena... sapevamo, credevamo di sapere... Un eccidio di uomini, donne, bambini nel 1915 in nome della 'grande Turchia'. Decenni sono passati da allora, il popolo armeno attende ancora giustizia e noi - come milioni di altri - quasi ignoravamo tutto questo."..." L'occasione fu la lettura del bel libro di Antonia Arslan 'La masseria delle allodole', un romanzo particolare, qualcosa come una indiretta autobiografia. Antonia è italiana di origine armena, e nel libro ha raccontato l'olocausto della sua famiglia. Romanzo, documento. Per noi due ha segnato l'incontro tra gli eventi del passato e quelli del nostro presente. Ma, come sempre, non ci interessava - e non ne saremmo stati capaci - disegnare un quadro storico. Ci interessava seguire alcune creature, i loro destini particolari, unici, e proiettarli poi in un grande evento collettivo, che si rivela nel suo orrore oggi, ma che affonda le sue radici nel passato. ... Antonia is an Italian of Armenian origin, and her book tells of her family's extermination. Both a novel and a document, it brought together the events of the past and present for the two of us. But, as always, we were not interested in making a purely historical film, nor would we have been able to. We wanted to follow the unique destinies of certain individuals, placing them in the larger context of a collective event whose horror is fully visible today, but whose roots stretch back into the past. ...
